HypeDocks Joins the Tumult Family

We’re excited to share news with the Hype community today: Michelangelo Agostinetto, the creator of HypeDocks, has handed over ownership of his site to Tumult. We’re honored to become its caretaker and ensure it continues to serve as an excellent showcase of incredible Hype animations.

A Labor of Love

Michelangelo discovered Hype back in 2011 at the very beginning. He’s a passionate web designer and developer who had been working with the software and designing and animating. He saw the need for a specialized website where it would be easy to discover what other designers were doing with Hype—a place to find inspiration, learn new techniques, and explore creative possibilities. That idea became HypeDocks, and it has grown into an invaluable resource for our community.

From showcasing incredible Hype documents and templates to featuring articles, tutorials, and apps built with Hype, Michelangelo has excelled in highlighting the creative talent in our community. It’s become a hub where developers can share their work, learn from each other, and push the boundaries of what’s possible with Hype.

Preserving a Wonderful Resource

While we’ll likely integrate new gallery items and updates into the Tumult Hype gallery over time, we want to preserve HypeDocks as it is—a wonderful resource to explore incredible Hype documents and the creative community behind them. The site represents years of curation and dedication, and that deserves to be maintained.

If you haven’t browsed HypeDocks yet, we encourage you to have a look around. It’s awesome. You’ll find templates, add-ons, websites, apps, infographics, educational content, and so much more—all created by talented members of the Hype community. It’s inspiring to see what’s possible when creative minds have the right tools.

Thank You, Michelangelo

We want to extend our deepest thanks to Michelangelo for being an excellent member of the community and for creating such a great home for all the incredible things you—the community—create. His dedication to building and maintaining HypeDocks over the years has enriched the Hype ecosystem and helped countless developers discover new possibilities with the software. Follow Michelangelo over on Instagram to stay up to date with his next projects.

Tumult Hype has a plugin feature called Export Scripts which allows anyone to extend parts the Hype application. Typically this augmented functionality helps with export workflows by automating modifications needed for advertising systems like Google Ads, Sizmek, Adform, and others. Most of these Export Scripts are written in the Python programming language.

Today Apple released the macOS 12.3 update, which unfortunately removes the Python programming language from the operating system. Therefore, Export Scripts written in Python will no longer continue to run out-of-the-box.

To keep your Python-based export scripts working, Tumult is providing a custom installation of Python for you to install called the Python Export Script Enabler along with changes in the Hype v4.1.8 application to utilize it. If you use Export Scripts, you will need to:

Update to Tumult Hype 4.1.8

Download and install the PythonExportScriptEnabler.pkg

For more information about this change, please visit the Python Enabler page, or if you are an Export Script developer, please read more detailed documentation on GitHub about how this affects your users.

Tumult Hype 4.1.8 contains a few other fixes as well, and is recommended for everyone to install.

What’s new in Tumult Hype 4.1.8:

Supports the Python Export Script Enabler to keep export scripts running since Python has been removed from macOS 12.3

Added JavaScript event notifications for HypeEnterViewport and HypeExitViewport

Fixed issue where Chrome would warn about navigator.userAgent deprecation

At Tumult, we’ve supported digital book creators for years. In 2012 we built in support for embedding Hype content in the new iBooks Author tool created by Apple. This empowered storytellers to embed rich HTML content and animations in their books and distribute them globally. While Hype animators don’t always tell us what they’re working on, we began seeing incredible animated books like Noa’s Stars by Somoiso and The Slightly Annoying Elephant by David Williams & illustrated by Tony Ross. There’s several more examples on this page of iBook examples, this post featuring animators and graphic artists and many more in our gallery.

iBooks Author was particularly empowering to animators, writers, and artists creating stories and animations because it was so easy to create great looking content without the complexity of digital publishing workflows and overly-complex layout tools. Looking back on this time we’re happy to have helped so many creative people achieve their visions. But there’s some big changes coming with iBooks Author: the book-creation tools are moving to Pages in Apple’s ecosystem:

In many ways this is great. Pages is even more powerful than iBooks Author and has enormous benefits for creating Epubs and iBooks. But it’s also not so great: Pages does not at this time support any HTML content, so Hype animations won’t work in it unless you export your animations as a non-interactive video.

We were pleased to come across a powerful book creation tool where HTML5 content (and Hype exports) are supported called PubCoder. Getting your Hype exports into PubCoder is very easy, and exporting to an iBook or Epub is a one-button process. We wrote a guide for getting your Hype content into PubCoder, and our new friends at PubCoder also published a guide. We’re looking forward to see what you create!
