Daniel Morgan is the Director of Support at Tumult and is the point of contact for technical questions, tutorials, and documentation.

When did you start at Tumult?

I linked up with Jonathan Deutsch & Ryan Nielsen who were looking for help to get through their growing support queue. Hype at that point (five years ago) was a promising app that I had used briefly previously — I had a feeling it was answering a huge need so I happily joined up with Tumult. Since then I’ve helped launch many big updates to Hype — It’s very fulfilling to empower people to create for the web while using a tool they love.

Can you give us a hint about what we should expect from the Hype Conference?

I’ve been lucky enough to meet nearly all of the Hype Conference speakers in one way or another: either at last year’s iBooks Author conference, or from other more virtual communications as Tumult Hype’s director of support. A big topic I want to cover from all angles is responsive + flexible layouts, and all the considerations that you should take into account when preparing a new project.

I’ll also be speaking about some bleeding edge techniques with Hype to show off how you can use Hype with some new web technologies.

Founder and lead developer Jonathan Deutsch will give the mile high view of Tumult Hype at the Hype Conference on October 8th. He’ll cover the past, present, and may offer a sneak peek at the future of Hype.

Tell me a bit about yourself and what brought you to Hype:

I’ve been with Hype since the beginning – the very first time ‘build’ was pressed in Xcode!

Hype was started based on two thoughts:

1: HTML5, not Flash, would be the path to making browser-based animations/interactivity in the future (aka now), and 2: There should be visual tools for visual browser effects. I saw these needs first-hand when I was working on an animated website documenting a recent vacation to Europe. Like any good engineer, instead of spending 5 hours hand coding the site, I decided to spend 5 years making a tool that could make the site for me!
What’s most exciting about doing what you do?

I love seeing what people create with Tumult Hype – I’d say it is probably the same feeling a brush maker has when they see a painting made with their brushes. Animated Children’s books are especially heart warming. Beyond the content itself though, the engineer part of me is especially excited when we get a document from a user (say as part of a support question) and seeing a new feature put to use. There’s some amount of features we can intuit will be adopted, but others (like Physics, Symbols, Custom Behaviors, etc.) are a bit of a gamble to develop. They can take a long time, and due to complexity were aren’t sure if the utility will be worth the learning curve. So when I see these features being used to create something new, I know the gamble paid off.

Can you share a hint about what you’ll be talking about at the conference?

I’ll be talking about the evolution of Hype – where it has been, where it is, and where Hype is going. I’m planning to include a sneak peek at our upcoming release.

Included in this will be discussions of general trends for web animation and interactivity. Browsers and devices are becoming much more powerful and this is opening up lots of doors to make much more expressive animations. Also, the browser isn’t the only area Hype can be used, so I’m going to talk about app use cases and prototyping.

Anything else you might want to share with attendees about yourself?

A little known fact is that I love the thrill of on-the-spot challenges. Often when I give a talk an audience member will ask, “can I do [some sufficiently difficult effect] with Hype?” Most of the time the answer is going to be “yes,” and it is fun for me to figure out how to do it live and demonstrate to them. A year ago at the iBooks Author conference an attendee asked about replicating Photoshop filter functionality – through some quick timelines animating CSS Filter Effects and On Drag actions I was able to do this task in a couple of minutes. This won them over to using Hype for future projects. So I’m secretly hoping to get hard questions at the conference!

Dean’s a great storyteller and he’ll be speaking at the Hype Conference about his experience animating iBooks with Susan in their new animation endeavor:

Tell me a bit about yourself and what brought you to Tumult Hype:

Sue and I were impressed with the possibilities Hype offered a group with our skill sets, giving us the tools to create a series of animated kids books for iBooks. We met a dozen years ago, and decided it would be a fun match. We had no plans for doing anything along the lines of writing books.

As a young mom, Sue would tell her kids made-up stories, and created several characters and story lines which her kids, now grown, still remember. So we decided to join my publishing and computer graphics history and interests, with her story lines and illustrations, and began in 2012 to learn iBooks Author and iPad illustrating programs, and join it all together to publish kids books, giving birth to “How About…” Kids books. We recently published a new How about… An Undersea Adventure in addition to five new Pinky and Dirty stories animated with Hype this week.

The entire process is exciting. It has meant that being retired had nothing to do with having nothing to do; we are working daily as nearly a full time job, together, and keeping our brains bubbling with new ideas, new capabilities, and new challenges which make us remember how much fun life and being productive can be.

Hype is to me a bit like chess. You can get the idea of it, and have some fun results with it, pretty much from the beginning. And like chess, I suspect it would take a lifetime of experience making increasingly amazing results to begin to feel like a true master. Like life, the more I learn about Hype, the more I feel like I want to learn. It’s good for the brain, and for the imagination.

What’s most exciting about the books you’re working on?

As I embark on this entirely new pursuit as the actual builder of these books, including the content to be animated, I am yet again glad to have been born at such as exciting time in information creation and distribution. And it seems to continue to revolve around the process of publishing, now in a new and more efficient generation.

We are also re-releasing for Nashville, one of our early titles, “How About…” Music, since Nashville is after all, Music City. It too will be rich with animations. All together we have something like 100 animations across all the titles.

I’ve been an instructor at a two year Community College in Saint Paul, MN since 2002 in the areas of web design and animation. I learned about Tumult Hype while researching HTML5 compatible alternatives to Flash and ActionScript. I loved the simplicity of the Hype user interface, along with the Javascript API functions included in the Hype package.

What’s most exciting about your job or projects you’re working on?

Starting in the Fall Semester of 2016, we are offering a new degree and certificate option using Tumult Hype and Javascript to create a variety of Retro games. This program will pull together skills in programming, graphic design, audio editing, game logic and user experience to create a variety of games in an active learning environment. So far the response from students has been very exciting!

Can you share a hint about what you’ll be talking about at the conference?

My focus for the last year and half has been to recreate some of the games I grew up with within a web environment. My motivation came from platforms like the Atari 2600, the original Nintendo Entertainment System and various 1980’s coin operated games. Plus, I took some inspiration after reading “Ready Player One” by Ernest Cline.

When he’s not teaching motion graphics, web design, and digital storytelling at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee, he’s creating new digital experiences for clients.

Tell me a bit about yourself and what brought you to Hype:

I started off in audio engineering and video production. The internet started to become “a thing” about 5 years into my career. I was fascinated with the possibilities. It didn’t take long for me to come across Flash. I was particularly interested in working with audio and video on the web. Flash just seemed to open that door. It didn’t take long and I was really getting into motion graphics and interactions which then led to ActionScript, HTML and the beginnings of CSS.

Fast forward to April 2010, where a majority of the work I was doing was Flash/Video based. Steve Jobs declared Flash to be dead and therefor it would be so. 🙂 Other options needed to be explored (despite this declaration from Mr. Jobs) as mobile was becoming the dominant medium for which I was creating content. HTML5, CSS 3 and JavaScript were the logical tools for moving forward, yet I was still yearning to create/generate ideas within a keyframe/timeline based platform. HTML5 canvas wasn’t quite the same experience for roughing out ideas and concepts. When I discovered Hype, it was similar to running across an old friend who had changed with the times, just as I had. We could move onward together with new ideas and possibilities.

What’s most exciting about your job or projects you’re working on?

Directing content through various levels of media channels. No matter what medium I jump in at with a client, it typically leads to translating that content into another platform. I enjoy the challenge of taking a video concept or campaign and translating that into a web or printed piece that extends or complements the overall purpose for the content.

Can you share a hint about what you’ll be speaking about at the conference?

Because Hype has had the Hype Reflect app since version 2.0, it was a logical progression and curiosity to create and preview content specifically for mobile. From using pins to being able to create flexible layouts for different screen sizes in Hype Pro, there is nothing like creating a high fidelity prototype and putting it in the hands of an app developer and/or client and watching them interact with it. I’m excited to share some of the various works that my UI/UX students have done when prototyping, since they are the ones who, with their passion, have pushed the edges of Hype to create the most engaging prototypes.

Anything else you might want to share with attendees about yourself?

The day of our event is my wife’s (Tracey) birthday. She works in marketing and is excited to attend the conference.

Tell me a bit about yourself and what brought you to Hype…

I am a high school math teacher and technology integration specialist. My high school went 1:1 iPads during the 2011–2012 school year. At the time I was moving much of my math curriculum into ePub format via Apples Pages. In January of 2012 iBooks Author was released and it was then that I began to develop more media-rich interactive content for my students. As I scoured for ideas on how to embed applets and websites directly into the pages of my iBooks I came across Tumult’s Hype and immediately grabbed a hold of the potential and power of this software.

At the time I wanted to embed Geogebra worksheets (applets) in my math iBooks. Geogebra provided a way to embed these worksheets in webpages and it was only a matter of time before I found the tutorial on Hype’s webpage about creating an HTML widget by modifying the .html file with the embed code.

At first I used Hype at a very basic level. As I devoured Hype tutorials and played around with the program I became more familiar with actions and scenes. To date I probably still use Hype at a basic level but it is a great way for me to be creative and build interactivity into my digital math curriculum.

What’s are you working on lately?

I am creating a series of interactive Geometry iBooks for my students.

Can you share a hint about what you’ll be talking about at the conference?

I will be speaking about how I use Hype in the classroom and for instructional design, and what it has been like for me being a teacher with no programing or coding experience diving into Hype. I find Hype to be extremely useful, elegant, and simple to learn.

Anything else you might want to share with attendees about yourself?

Much of my earlier work really stinks. I feel like I lack a bunch of knowledge when it comes to instructional design. I am learning as I go. Creating digital content is a skill today’s teachers need to have. Hype is a great piece of software that builds attractive interactive content for all devices.
